Caddywhompus EP

2009? Self Released
whoever said cajuns don't make good music can gtfo. here's a band from the great deep south-- most of their songs are references to places in/near where i grew up which is awesome. plus, they're just suuuuuuuuuuuuuper good. it's 2 guys. their live set is even better than recordings. this shit is extremely catchy with serious sing-a-long-ability. i should just rip the cd i have with more than 4 songs, but this will have to do for now. they also have a new record that was just released on community records!

Tracklist:
1. This is Where We Blaze the Nuggz
2. Fun Times at Whiskey Bay
3. Absinthesizer
4. Untitled #4708

Bring Back the Guns - Unmastered Futures

2005 | Self Released
They played some show in Lafayette years and years ago, I still hung on to the cd. BBTG used to be known as The Groceries back in the day- they toured with The Toadies. You're going to listen to this and think Pavement made a dance rock record, which is ok. They also did a split with So Many Dynamos, which is not this file you are considering downloadinginginginging

4 Dry's Future

Skeletons - Life and the Afterbirth

2003 | Shinkoyo
if you give me the chance, i'd like to fuck away your memory.. fuck away mistakes i've made..

this band is good. their lyrics are brilliant. i have distinct memories associated with my first apartment on 9th & hoosick in troy. they recently played around here, but i couldn't make myself go alone. i imagine if i made music, it would sound like this building's on fire.

Tracklist
1 crash
2 death and the afterlife
3 let's get out of here or i better get going or i hope i can
4 a male angel means business
5 my friend drowned in his own vomit

Radical Face - Ghost

2007 | Morr Music
Here is one of my most favorite albums in the world. Easily top ten, maybe higher than that. The first time i heard this album was when I was going through the thousands of new cds coming in to WRPI. 99.8% of them were shit, but things like this came along and really made sorting through the new bins worthwhile. I should have spent more time going to class than sitting in that studio....

Radical Face is a solo effort from a guy Ben Cooper from Florida; Ghost is a concept album about the stories that stay with homes. That's all I can say really.. the label should say enough. Belgium's Morr Music consistently releases A+ material. But damn! This dude can make a catchy album (he is also one half of electric president- great shit- which I'll post soon). Wrapped in piano strings is the obvious winner here, but start to finish the album goes through as many moods as an episode of Battlestar, and is much better listened to in its entirety. The artwork on the LP is gorgeous, too.

Oh, and two songs were on the soundtrack for The Vicious Kind. It's always really surprising when music you have a deep fondness for shows up publicly- like on a random movie Netflix gave 4 stars that you decided to watch one night when it was too late but you were feeling sad or sorry for yourself so you put it on anyway.

Tracklist:
1 Asleep on a Train
2 Welcome Home, Son
3 Let the River In
4 Glory
5 The Strangest Things
6 Wrapped in Piano Strings
7 Along the Road
8 Haunted
9 Winter is Coming

collider - strobos ep

June 2010 | self-released
i posted the EP schemes by san francisco's sea exchange a few days ago. since then i've been wishing i had posted this album, strobos, released by the same band under their other name collider. i seriously/literally/really/honestly/adverbly can't get enough of this band- or this genre. i find the whole album uplifting, or hopeful-- beautiful and easy to absorb.

music that can really take you away.

tracklist:

Current - Discography

1992-1994 | various self-releases
early emo from ottowa. i can't take credit for discovering this band, or even listening to them when i was at the ripe age of six years old. some old dude from baton rouge who happened to marry my best friend was showing off his records last christmas and broke out their full length, coliseum (released in 1993 on council records). i listened and loved. this discography moves backwards in time, beginning with the band's final 7" and ending with their earliest releases (total 180 on the vocals, right? i really just prefer the later stuff)

here's a video. (probably should figure out embedding on blogspot...)

I, Robot - Et Cetera

2002 | Immigrant Sun

you're thinking the only reason i like this band is because they're named after an Asimov novel, which is partially true. if they sucked i would probably still have it. but it doesn't suck, in fact, it's awesome. i like the end of "call me killer" because it does the twinkly... but i always used "the mullets vs. the mustaches" on mixtapes. i guess these dudes are in a post rock band now called homesick for space that sounds like moving mountains. they should have at least kept the vocals...

Tracklist:
01 the answer
02 call me 'killer'
03 James Earl Jones
04 what if

Commander Venus - The Uneventful Vacation

This is an early conor oberst band, commander venus. I love his young shaky voice much more than anyone should. I still love his voice more than I should.

Sea Exchange - Schemes

2010 | Self-Released

First off all, sorry I'm bad at being a host of something on the internet.

Second first of all, Let me just say that right now i can hear the ice cream truck outside, my roommate learning the drums in the basement, and kids screaming outside. All of those sounds individually are annoying, much less all at once. Fortunately I'm listening to the song spacedrft9 from Sea Exchange's (formerly Collider) album Schemes, which is kind of laying a drifting soundtrack layer to the sounds of life. It's always a little magically awkward when mundane real world sounds are laced with the music you're listening to. This is the perfect album for that. Also very good highly recommended driving music.

Also, I should add the last song- Lucid Dream (ITC Edit) is unbelievable on good, loud speakers.

Tracklist:
1. Mono
2. Tired Angles Make New Shapes
3. scenes of ourselves vox
4. LED
5. Reject 14
6. anxi ixi
7. Fight Till You're Right
8. Iduro

12. Scenes Of Ourselves (Slow Jam)
13. Lucid Dream (ITC edit)

Elliott - False Cathedrals

August 2000 | Revelation Records
A pretty straight forward emo rock band with great sound and catchy songs. Elliott was around from 1995 – 2003, this was their best work. I want to say Superstitions in Travel is my favorite song because it features epic singability. But of course, Drive on to Me has a pop-charm that none of the tracks on this album can compare to. Overall: a nostalgic, amiable record not to be forgotten.

Tracklist:
1 Voices
2 Calm Americans
3 Blessed by Your Own Ghost
4 Drive on Me
5 Calvary Song
6 Lipstick Stigmata
7 Dying Midwestern
8 Shallow Like Your Breath
9 Superstitions in Travel
10 Carving Oswego
11 Lie Close
12 Speed of Film

Et Tu Brute - Demo

2004 | Self Released Demo

This is the only recording Et Tu Brute put out, which is a damn shame. I have a figurative female hard-on for the Latin language, so this band does great things for me. Their bass player's a babe, too. I don't have an album cover, they just sent me a cd-r with red sharpie hearts on it. I wonder if any of these guys are still making (amazing) music...

Tracklist
1 All Things Equal
2 Favete Linguis
3 With One Last Look
4 Zombies Avantgarde

DARYL - The Technology

August 2005 | Beatville Records

Dreamy kind of singable pop songs from Dallas, Texas. I put this album on every few months (or years) when I flip to it in my cd binder- every song is fun. Motion in Progress is the most memorable song on the album-- think indie rock goes to Epcot.

December's Tragic Drive - Marigold and Patchwork

1997 | Self Released?

This band is currently known as The Appleseed Cast (my favorite band), but I decided to showcase this record to pay some respect to their roots. Many of these songs went on to the Appleseed Cast’s End of the Ring Wars LP. It is a very lo-fi album released in 1997 just before they changed their name. Actually, this album features the song Skaater Ik Ignito, which is on their Tale of the Aftermath 7” (I have been searching for this record everywhere!) The song Stars comes in slow and sad, featuring a beautiful horns section.

Tracklist

1 Antihero

2 Marigold and Patchwork

3 Stars

4 Dreamland

5 Skaater Ik Ignito

6 Untitled 1/2

Le Pre ou Je Suis Mort - Le Pre ou Je Suis Mort

April 2005 | Communication is Not Words

The best thing about this recent French screamo band is their album mastering is perfect. This band is the right amount of powerful and sincere. I especially love the drowsy, melodic section ending the second track, Une fois de plus, which carries seamlessly into Terre Promise. These guys play beautiful guitar riffs that still carry sad undertones-- the kind you can’t help bounce your head to.

The band’s name, and consequently their self titled LP, literally translates to ‘The meadow where I died.’ The record I ordered came with a screened tote bag I can use to carry around a couple records at a time. (It’s the little things! They even sent me a cute little origami turtle.) The LP is pressed to a gorgeous half white – half black lp and is a beautiful addition to any record collection.

Tracklist:
a1. Vision
a2. Une fois de plus
a3. Terre promise
b1. Silence

I took this on my phone one night in Coventry, CT last fall. I still think it's beautiful.

really i'm just testing the texting option..

Cross My Heart - Temporary Contemporary

2000 | Deep Elm Records
Another early 2000s emo band, Cross my Heart plays a similar brand of emo to Benton Falls with a stronger vocalist and less intricate, but still jangly riffs. This was a band I always looked forward to on those Deep Elm Records Compilations, the Emo Diaries. Actually I totally forgot about them until yesterday when I was going through old empty cd jewel cases.. I wish I had lost the cases and not the discs. But I suppose those discs are scratched to shit now anyway. I'm sure you'll hear more bands from those comp's from me eventually..

Tracklist
1 The Great Depression
2 Tonight We'll Light Ourselves on Fire
3 Paris
4 London Bridge
5 With Bells On
6 Infinity Doesn't Live Here Anymore
7 Self-loathing Bastard
8 Angels & Gargoyles

Benton Falls - Fighting Starlight

August 2001 | Deep Elm Records
This is a good album for my first post.

Benton Falls, from Santa Rosa, CA played a beautiful popular midwestern-sounding emo in the early 2000s. This is my favorite album of theirs, though the edgier Guilt Beats Hate is a close second. I went through alot with this album growing up, and I hope I never forget about it. Guess that's why it's here...

The song Back to Nothing begins with, "i follow you around / like i follow the sea / but i see you're not / interested in me..." which i think rounds out the entire album pretty well-- struggling with the idea of isolation or abandonment. But there's something hopeful left behind in all the whining.

Tracklist
1 All These Things
2 Swimming With You
3 Fighting Starlight
4 Sad Like Winter Leaves
5 Always Behind A Smile
6 June Port Bridge
7 No Hero
8 Coastal
9 Back To Nothing
10 Eudora

here is my first post. in the near future this area will be filled with beautiful music.. and other ideas i think are worth sharing.
